Background
Recently, Sun introduced a new 12-processor server to its product line, the V1280, extending the V480 and V880 line of 4 and 8-processor servers. The V1280 supplies greater performance and allows reconfiguration of the CPU, memory or I/O without having to reboot the server. Additionally, the V1280 is roughly 60% of the list price of Sun's other 4-12 way server, the F4800. Sun also announced a price reduction on its current line of midrange and high-end servers (F3800-F15000), by roughly 20%-30% while adding a new 1.2GHz chip (vs 1.05GHz) improving performance by roughly 14%.
