Virtualization: Party, party, party?

In an IT marketplace lacking an abundance of obvious opportunities, virtualization is one of the few reasons to celebrate. The economics of virtualization fit perfectly with the corporate mantra of lowering IT infrastructure costs. Before you break out the champagne in celebration, however, read this white paper detailing the benefits and potential pitfalls of virtualization.

Avoiding IT Project Limbo:
Why more than 50% of IT projects go nowhere

According to IT consultants, more than 50% of IT projects are not rejected. Unfortunately they are not approved either. They remain in limbo for months and sometimes even years. Why? Two frequent reasons. The presentation to justify the project relied either on a 12-line speadsheet providing no satisfactory answers, or on a 150-page business case that simply was impenetrable. A presentation with either too much detail or too little context means limbo is a certain destiny for your project. So what is the magical point between detail indigestion and oversimplification?

Imagine having the ability to take your bottom-up analysis and painlessly create a palatable one-page business case. Better yet, as questions are asked about your executive one-pager you can drill down on any of the business metrics and see the underlying technical assumptions ? even the amount of electricity consumed by your servers! CIOview?s SnapShot does just that.

Take a look at this example of a CRM database running Oracle on Linux compared to UNIX. Immediately you can see that the total 3-year cost is between $3.9 and $6.9 million depending on the platform chosen. It also is clear that the price difference largely is driven by:

  • The number and configuration of servers necessary to support 1,500 employees Scale-up vs. scale-out clusters IT staffing requirements
  • End-to-end availability and cost of downtime

Key to the effectiveness of this SnapShot is the fact that:

  • Factors driving the cost difference are immediately obvious Assumptions behind these factors are completely documented and easy to change
  • The SnapShot and 20+ MB of research data and assumptions are seamlessly linked
