Virtualization: Benefits of a “Candy Bowl” Strategy
Goody bags have become a requisite take away for any child’s birthday party. But imagine if, instead of identical goody bags, a child could choose his own goodies from a candy bowl. The ideal result would be more kids taking home exactly the kinds of sweets and gifts they want. On the other hand, unless there are plenty of rules and supervision, the result could be a free-for-all.

Server virtualization as an IT strategy can move you from an inefficient “goody bag” system, to a successful “candy bowl” approach. Virtualization can be as simple as combining two applications onto a one-processor server, or as complex as running 64 virtual servers on a 16-processor physical server. Ultimately the goal is to more efficiently utilize server resources. To understand if you can attain this goal, you obviously must take into account all acquisition costs. But more important – and sometimes overlooked -- are ongoing costs of items such as facilities required to house the servers, energy required to cool them, and personnel needed to manage them. Read CIOview's virtualization white paper to understand the TCO of your virtualization strategy.
