From the Desk of the President

As a valued member of our website, you receive updates sooner than the general public. As part of this benefit, we would like to announce the first public offering of TCOnow! for Disk Storage. Thank you for being a member, we hope you enjoy this month's newsletter!

Disk Storage:

How Much is that Doggie in the Window?

The traditional approach of purchasing storage is broken. Comparing the purchase cost per megabyte of one storage array to another misses over 70% of the potential costs and leads to two classic storage management pitfalls. Managers who purchase new storage often focus too much of their attention on the upfront cost of buying disk and inherit a cost structure that requires ever-increasing expenditures on advanced functions, storage software, and support and maintenance. Perhaps even more at risk are those managers who elect to stay with their existing environment, unaware that a more cost-effective storage solution is available to them. This second predicament is exaberbated further by the fact that the financial savings from consolidation or migration do not show up in traditional storage expenditure categories such as disk drives, disk expansion units, and disk arrays.

Next Week's Briefing
What Consultants Do Know

A line manager complained to his boss that recent production problems had him confused. His manager suggested a consultant could probably help. Upon his return, the manager inquired if the consultant had been money well spent. The line manager replied he was still confused, but at a much higher level.

There are no shortage of jokes about consultants, but used appropriately they can be incredibly valuable. So, where and when do consultants make sense and how do you get the most out of them?

Find out in next week's briefing.
